Get Your Roof Ready for Florida Hurricanes

High winds, heavy rain, hail, and debris: these are the parts of a storm that cause the most damage to your roof. Hurricane season is here and every Florida homeowner is concerned about their home. In 2022, Port Orange, Daytona Beach Shores, and Ponce Inlet got hit hard by hurricanes. Having a strong roof will help give you peace of mind. During a hurricane, your roof can experience wind speeds of 70 mph or more. The wind can shear off roof shingles and damage the wooden roof deck.

If your roof has some areas in need of repair before a hurricane, like curled or loose shingles, you may lose them during the storm. This means your home becomes exposed to water damage. If you have a new roof, it can likely withstand winds up to 110 mph. If the storm is over Category 3, your shingle roof will become more vulnerable. But what can you do to protect it?

It is important to keep your roof in top condition. Newer asphalt shingles come with superior nailing technology and recommendations. However, even the best shingle roof will not protect your home like a metal roof. Metal roofing can withstand winds of up to 160 mph. It is one of the most wind-resistant roofing materials available. It costs more upfront but can last a lifetime.

If you cannot afford a new metal roof, then roof maintenance is your best friend. Keep your gutters clean and remove any tree debris from your roof. Look for the following and get a roof repair if needed:

  • Damaged or missing shingles: Damaged asphalt shingles will be cracked, or the edges will be curled up. Patches of missing shingles will have a different color than the rest of your roof. If you find shingles in your gutter or yard, you know there’s a problem with your roof. Don’t wait for soft spots to form on your roof.

  • Ceiling, skylight, or attic leak: If a dark or discolored spot appears on the interior of your home, you may have a leaking roof. Older skylights may crack or leak. An immediate roof repair may be in order.

  • Mold on the roof: If water or moisture is trapped on your roof, then mold may form. This can be toxic if it grows inside the home. Over time it may become a health risk and cause property damage. Even if you can’t see a stain but you smell mold, it’s time to call your professional roofer for an inspection.
