Ormond Beach roof shingles

From tear-off to final inspection—here’s a step-by-step guide on how to install a new roof.

Installing a new shingle roof is a major home improvement project—especially in Florida, where heat, humidity, and hurricanes put roofing materials to the test. If you're getting a new asphalt shingle roof in Ormond Beach, or surrounding areas, it's natural to wonder: What happens on roof installation day? Can I stay in the house? Will there be a mess? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect before, during, and after the installation.

Before the Crew Arrives

The day starts early. Triangle Roofing’s team typically arrives between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM, depending on weather and site logistics. Here's what happens before the first old shingle is removed:

  • Site Prep: Tarps and protective sheeting are laid out to shield your landscaping and property.

  • Safety Check: Our roofing crew secures ladders and safety harnesses, ensuring a safe and efficient job site.

NOTE: It is important to remove your vehicle from the property. Although you can choose to stay in the home during a re-roofing, it will be very noisy and nails may fall onto the ground. Going in and out of the house, especially with pets or children, may not be a good idea. At the end of your project, we will use a magnet to ensure any nails are cleaned up - so don't worry about that!

A dumpster will arrive at your home so that we can keep your property clean during tear-off and the roof replacement. We may cover your plants to keep them safe from falling debris. Be aware that the work crew will be parking near your home and they will be there all day. The truck carrying your shingles may arrive at any time for delivery.

Step 1: Roof Tear-Off

Your existing shingles must be removed before new ones can be installed. This is called the tear-off process, and it’s noisy—but fast. If you're in the house, it's going to be very loud as the crew walks across your roof and removes old materials.

  • Old shingles are stripped down to the decking

  • Debris is placed directly into a trailer or dumpster

  • We check for signs of rot or water damage in the wood decking

Step 2: Decking Inspection & Repairs

Once the old shingles are removed, the underlying roof decking is carefully inspected. If we find soft spots, rot, or water damage, we replace the affected sections to ensure a solid base. This is critical in rainy, coastal Volusia County, where trapped moisture can shorten a roof’s lifespan.

Step 3: Installing Underlayment & Flashing

After repairs, we install layers of protection before the new shingles go on:

  • Synthetic underlayment is added to create a water-resistant barrier. We help you choose the right one ahead of time.

  • Flashing is installed around chimneys, vents, valleys, and walls to stop water intrusion.

  • Starter strips are applied at roof edges for better shingle adhesion and wind protection.

⚠️ In Ormond Beach, building codes require specific materials to meet wind resistance standards—Triangle Roofing always complies with Florida roofing laws.

Step 4: Shingle Installation

Now comes the part you’ve been waiting for—the new shingles you carefully chose go on!

  • New roof shingles are installed in a staggered pattern for strength and style

  • Ridge caps and ventilation systems are added last

  • We follow manufacturer specifications to ensure your warranty stays valid

We use premium shingles from top brands like CertainTeed and Owens Corning, available in algae-resistant, wind-rated, and energy-efficient options ideal for Ormond Beach and surrounding area homes.

Step 5: Clean-Up & Final Walkthrough

Once the new roof is complete, our skilled crew does a thorough clean-up:

  • Magnet sweep for stray nails

  • Debris removal

  • Final quality check with the homeowner (you!)

We'll go over what was installed, answer your questions, and ensure you're 100% satisfied.

After Installation: Warranty & Peace of Mind

You’ll receive documentation outlining your warranty coverage, and we’ll register your new roof with the manufacturer (if required). With proper maintenance, your new roof should last about 20 years—or even longer with upgraded materials. Finally, we ask you for a customer review!
